ATIC ATD Telecom Services Definitions & Resources:

Voice Telephony Services:
Voice Telephony - Wireline Business (individual circuits) is the traditional analog service to individual businesses using telephone company unshielded twisted pair copper-based or cable operator Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) facilities. Sometimes simply referred to as dialtone.

Voice Telephony - Wireline Business (multi-line circuits) are digital services, such as a T1, that provide multiple trunks over telephone company unshielded twisted pair copper-based or cable operator Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) facilities or alternatively direct fiber optic connections. An on-site Private Branch Exchange (PBX) may be used to route calls and implement messaging and advanced features.

Voice Telephony - Wireline Business (Centrex services) offers the business customer non-equipment-based Private Branch Exchange (PBX)-class services along with basic services relying on the telecom provider's facilities for switching and other functions.

Voice Telephony - Fixed Wireless (Wireless Local Loop) uses stationary facilities and fixed antennas to provide basic voice services over radio frequency-based transmissions. Thus dial tone and voice telephone services are delivered to businesses or residences without any direct wire connection.

Voice Telephony - Long Distance Services connects voice telephony users to other locations outside their local calling region at additional charges, usually on a per minute basis.

Miscellaneous Data Transport Services:
Frame Relay is a telecom interface specification for the delivery of low to medium speed data services over wide area networks utilizing packet switching with data organized into frames.

ISDN stands for Integrated Services Digital Network and can provide either Basic Rate Interface (BRI at 144 Kbps) which can be used for basic data connectivity or Primary Rate Interface (PRI at 1.544 Mbps) capable of carrying higher speed data and/or supporting up to 24 phone circuits.

xDSL indicates any of the Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) family of services provisioned over unshielded twisted pair copper from telephone company Central Offices (COs) or remote Digital Subscriber Line Multiplexers (DSLAMs) by the ILEC or various CLECs.

Cable Modem uses the cable television Hybrid Fiber Coaxial (HFC) infrastructure to deliver data services to residential and business users.

OC-x (provisioned fiber) is a provisioned Optical Carrier (OC) fiber optic network connection, usually delivered over SONET (synchronous optical network) rings. Common OC rates are OC-3 (155 Mbps), OC-12 (622 Mbps), OC-48 (2.488 Gbps), OC-192 (9.953 Gbps) and OC-768 (39.812 Gbps).

Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) is a dedicated connection switching technology with typical signaling rates of 155 or 622 Mbps.

Fiber Capacity (leased lambda or dark fiber) Leased lambda services allow a specific wavelength to be assigned to a customer when using DWDM (Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing) technology. Vendors providing dark fiber services lease non-provisioned fiber optic cables.

Fiber to the Home (FTTH - future availability) is an alternative to copper UTP-based wireline services where a fiber optic cable is delivered directly to the subscriber's residence or business.
