Participating members of the FCC were:
After introductions we had a free wheeling discussion on issues related to Arizona. These included :
We also discussed what Arizona has been doing over the last 2 years with the Governors Council on Innovation and Technology (GCIT); the CANAMEX WiFi project in Southern Arizona; the RFI as well as issues of lack of broadband and no redundancy where it does exist.
The FCC does not fund projects. They have the ability to research and put us in touch with federal and private resources to implement project, such as the Gates Foundation, RUS, Department of Commerce, etc. They will also facilitate intergovernmental cooperation.
Resources of many government agencies are on line and can be found in the publication sent to members of the committee called, LANDS OF OPPORTUNITY: Bringing Telecommunications Services to Rural Communities. The publication is in the hands of most members of our committee and can be found on line at the Bureau of Consumer & Governmental Affairs, http://www.fcc.gov/cgb 202.418.1400.
We were encouraged to participate in the USDA conference in DC on May 12, 2005. The conference will focus on broadband awareness. Information may be on the USDA web site or we can contact Mary Campanela 202.720.8882 or mary.campanela@usda.gov.
What I got out of this meeting with the FCC is that we in Arizona need to get our act together with a number of possible programs and strategies to bring broadband to rural and other underserved areas. We need to bring all stakeholders to the table and talk about what is needed and how the FCC can work with us to bring the resources together to bring broadband to all segments of our communities.
This needs to be a concerted effort to leverage what we have with what we need.
