Committee Reports
Joint Government Affairs/Strategic Planning Committees (Mike Keeling, Steve Peters, Kurt Jonckheer)
Cyber Security Committee (Jerry Crow, Cindy Donaldson)--
Jerry reported that after the outstanding success of our "Case for Cyber Security in Small Businesses" event held in partnership with the Arizona Cyber Security Alliance on February 24, 2004, Cyber Security Committee meetings had resumed in March and April. The April 12 meeting reviewed committee's accomplishments as well as a snapshot of the committee purpose and goals to determine next steps:
Full Committee meeting minutes are included below. Additional Committee meetings with presenters are scheduled at Electronic Data Systems (EDS) from 10 a.m. - Noon for May 10 with Peter Graves of Boeing and June 14 with Melissa Guenther.
ACC Activities (Tom Campbell) --
Tom kept his report short as he will spend significant time at tomorrow's public meeting detailing current issues. He reported that the FCC Triennial Review and issues with unbundled network element availability subject to a recently vacated district court decision and have been extended. A VoIP docket has been opened at the ACC and will be used for information gathering and education on issues by the Commissioners.
Arizona Telecom Directory (Ralph Gierish, Brad Tritle, Mark Goldstein --
Mark reported on ATD web site usage. The site sees some 60-90 unique visitors daily, thus some 2500-3000 per month on an ongoing basis. Monthly page views are about 8500 and hits about 24K. Traffic on the site remains relatively strong, down somewhat from early project use initially, but steady. Questions were raised as to the presence and visibility of an accuracy disclaimer, the need for a feedback form, the desire for visual output of query results, and the need to gather feedback from telecom providers about success of the ATD. The ATD project oversight committee should be reactivated and the project reenergized with the active pursuit of additional telecom vendors, updates, evolution towards mapping outputs.
Monthly "General Information" Meetings
Mark Goldstein reported on the agenda for the next ATIC Public Meeting planned for April 15 (tomorrow) from 2:00 - 4:00 p.m. to focus on all the high-tech policy activities underway in Arizona. Additional public meetings are planned for June 10, September 16, and November 18.
Informational Presentations
GladysAnn Wells, Director, Arizona State Library, Archives and Public Records introduced Linda Montgomery, Director of the Braille and Talking Book Library Division. Linda detailed the Division's offerings to anyone blind, visually impaired or physically disabled and thus unable to read standard print materials. They provide a range of free services including books and magazines on cassettes and in Braille, the loan of special equipment, newspapers read over the telephone, and descriptive videos with audio descriptions of the visual elements. The program reaches about 11K individuals in Arizona today of the 70K or so who would qualify, with an average of 1500 items sent out each day. Some 65-70 new audio books with local interest are produced here each year.
Copyright exceptions allow the special use and adaptation of materials for this user community. The conversion from analog tape to digital media is being actively planned and engaged, with digital mastering, a new digital player, and flash memory card distribution in the works. The Arizona Friends of Talking Books is funding the conversion of the studio to modern technology and duplicating. Volunteers are always needed to assist with reading and home equipment setup, perhaps of interest to our members. Question remains as to how ATIC can help publicize the program and otherwise assist. Contact Linda Montgomery at 602-255-5578 or limontg@lib.az.us for more information or to volunteer your time.
