Important Debate

On Wednesday, October 4, 2006 Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) Candidates debated important issues and decisions that impact cost and availability of utilities, public safety, quality of life, and Arizona's businesses and economic development. Congratulations to Kris Mayes and Gary Pierce who were elected to the two open ACC seats on 11/7/06.

The Citizens Clean Elections Commission (CCEC) selected the Arizona Telecommunications and Information Council (ATIC) to host and Web Cast this General Election debate for candidates for the Arizona Corporation Commission. You can view the Webcast and Photos of the event online through Election Day and beyond.

Why You Should Attend

Telecommunications rates and services, renewable energy, the cost of natural gas, and the integrity of the pipelines that carry gasoline across the state are among the issues to be debated at this General Election debate for the candidates for the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC). The Arizona Citizens Clean Elections Commission (CCEC) selected the Arizona Telecommunications and Information Council (ATIC) to host and Web Cast this debate in cooperation with the Arizona Consumers Council.

Why should you attend? This powerful body, often described as a "Fourth Branch of Government", makes decisions that have an enormous impact on Arizona’s economic development and the finances, safety and well being of everyone - homes, schools, governments, nonprofits, the elderly, low income families, and businesses. Commission policies determine utility rates and the quality and availability of public utilities, including telecommunications, water, electric and natural gas. In addition to utilities regulation, the debates will cover other services under the jurisdiction of the Commission including Corporations and Securities Oversight, and Railroad and Pipeline Safety.

Don’t miss this opportunity to better understand the importance of the ACC, and to become acquainted with the positions of the candidates for this powerful government agency.

The Debate and ACC Jurisdiction

In most states the Commission is known as the Public Service Commission or the Public Utility Commission. Our Commission, however, has responsibilities that go beyond traditional public utilities regulation. This debate will cover all services under the jurisdiction of the Commission - Utilities Regulation, Corporations and Securities Oversight, and Railroad and Pipeline Safety:

The ACC Candidates

There are five members of the Arizona Corporation Commission (ACC) elected by the public to a four-year term. This year you will have the opportunity to vote for two of the five members of the Commission. There are five candidates for two seats on the Commission.

Live Presentation and Internet Web Cast

The debate was presented in front of a live audience and moderated by Mark Goldstein, ATIC Secretary and President, International Research Center at the Arizona Corporate Broadcast Center (AZCBC) in Phoenix. A candidate reception followed the debate. The debate was Web Cast in real time during the debate and remains available for on-demand statewide access from the ATIC Web Site following the debate. You can view the Webcast at your convenience anytime and anywhere you have access to the web through the November 7, 2006 General Election and beyond and find Photos of the event online as well.

Archives of our ACC Debates on October 7, 2004 and July 13, 2004, which were also done in partnership with the CCEC, remain accessible on the ATIC site. And from 2002 there are archives of our Arizona Gubernatorial Forum on October 17, 2002 and ACC Candidates Forum on September 19, 2002 , which was to the best of our knowledge the first ever live web cast of a statewide candidates' debate in the country if not the world.
