Committee Meetings
- Monday, November 8, 2004 Meeting at the Business and Industry Institute, 145 N Centennial Way, Mesa, AZ.
The November meeting of the ATIC Cyber Security Committee was held on Monday
the 8th at the Business and Industry Institute of Mesa Community College.
This meeting was primarily a planning meeting with a look toward activities
in 2005. Our thanks to Morris Harmor of the Business and Industry Institute
for hosting this meeting and for offering to host meetings of the committee
in 2005 (more on that below). A number of items were discussed and several
decisions were made regarding future committee meetings. A summary of items
discussed and decided at the meeting follows.
- Jeni Li was officially welcomed as the new co-chair of the
committee.
- It was decided that the mission of the committee will be better
served if we change the meeting frequency to bi-monthly. Accordingly, there
will be no meeting in December and beginning with the January meeting on
January 10th we will hold meetings every other month. In addition, in order
to make meeting attendance more convenient, the meeting location will
alternate between the EDS Southwest Solution Center on the west side and the
Business and Industry Institute on the east side. Meetings will continue to
be held on the second Monday of the month. The meeting schedule for 2005 is
as follows:
- November 14th, B&II (CANCELLED)/li>
Location:
- The Business and Industry Institute (B&II) is located at 145 N. Centennial Way, Mesa, AZ, 85201. See map and directions.
- All meetings will be held from 10:00 am to 12:00 noon unless
announced otherwise in advance. We are exploring the possibility of having
a luncheon meeting at some point in the future.
- We are moving ahead with preliminary planning for a second annual
cybersecurity symposium to be held in the first quarter of 2005. We are
exploring ideas and will form an event committee in the near future.
Committee Activities and Plans:
To effectively implement this mission, ATIC will partner with other authoritative organizations to leverage ATICÕs resources, and to reach the widest possible audience regarding both the risks that exist and the best practices and solutions needed to ensure the protection of critical information infrastructure while assuring proper balance between security, privacy, and cost effectiveness. The ATIC Cyber Security Committee will:
- Leverage ATIC's resources by partnering.
- ATIC will engage a diverse coalition of public and private sector stakeholders.
- ATIC will identify and partner with other Arizona and national organizations that are already dealing with various aspects of cyber security.
- Identify best practices.
- The ATIC Cyber Security Committee will identify risks and associated best practices as well as the most efficient and effective solutions, including adverse impacts on privacy.
- The ATIC Cyber Security Committee will develop and share a basic understanding of the security/privacy implications related to telecommunications and information.
- Advocate, Promote, Communicate and Market best practices.
- The ATIC Cyber Security Committee will advocate best practices to stakeholders, private and public, including individuals.
- The ATIC Cyber Security Committee will promote best practices and leading edge knowledge by creating an educational resource on what is being done -- for the cyber security planners as well as for the public.
- The ATIC Cyber Security Committee will reinforce communication of effective responses to information disruptions and intrusions. This could include communicating and advocating in order to build a consensus for correct or appropriate actions to be taken when breeches of security occur.
- The ATIC Cyber Security Committee will market and distribute this information to the media, opinion leaders and the public.
In cooperation with ATIC, the Arizona Cyber Security Alliance has recently been launched to help small and medium businesses and non-profits address rising information security threats. In the face of dramatic increases in threats to information security, theAlliancewill serve as a broad-based coalition of information technology professionals, small and medium sized businesses, and non-profit organizations to increase awareness of Cyber Security risks and to provide access to resources that will help improve critical information security practices withinArizonaorganizations. Visit the Arizona Cyber Security Alliance site for a wealth of cyber security resources and to see how you and your organization can be involved.
